In addition to serving people with mental illness and their families, NAMI New Orleans' mission calls us to educate the public about mental illness and to advocate for sound public policies at all levels of government.
Education Mental illness still carries a heavy stigma in our society. NAMI New Orleans aims to increase public understanding of mental illness and to dispel some myths. Some educational activities range from organizing public forums, to our local observance of National Mental Illness Awareness Week in October. For a listing of upcoming public events in the New Orleans area, please see our calendar.
Advocacy Much progress has been made in public policies affecting people with mental illness, especially the shift from institutionalization to community-based services. But major problems persist.Vital services are chronically under-funded, or facing the continual threat of elimination.
NAMI New Orleans is a strong, active voice for approximately 75,000 people in the Greater New Orleans Area - working directly to shape public policies at the state and federal government, as well as through NAMI Louisiana and NAMI, our national organization. There is strength in numbers. Please consider becoming a member of NAMI New Orleans. As a benefit of membership, you'll receive timely information on policies that directly affect you and your family. And you'll be adding another voice for positive change. Join us!
