Permanent, affordable housing and steady employment are essential to recovery from mental illness. Unfortunately, many people with mental illness still find the doors closed to them when they look for work or a place to live. Our housing and employment services help people with mental illness to live in the community, with dignity and independence.
Housing NAMI New Orleans is one of our community's leading providers of specialized housing for people with mental illness, offering an array of vital support services. At Canton House in uptown New Orleans and Newport in Kenner, we help residents acquire independent living skills such as budgeting and housekeeping. We also help clients find affordable rental housing close to their work, school or family, and ease the burden of setting up a household, moving expenses, utility deposits, furnishings, cooking utensils, linens, and more.
For more information on housing services, call Deanna Lainez at (504) 896-2345.
Employment The NAMI New Orleans employment program helps people make personal choices, increase their economic independence, and experience opportunities for personal and professional growth. It offers both supported employment services and transitional employment services. Supported Services include intensive support by experienced, trained staff to provide training, task analysis and problem solving to the employee. These services help to ensure the employee's level of success. Transitional services require NAMI New Orleans to take the responsibility of ensuring that high turnover positions are always manned for the employer. The employer in these positions guarantees a half-time position at minimum wage or better for our clients. Some of our community business partners include Martin Wine Cellar, Winn-Dixie, The Columns Hotel, Saturn of Metairie, The Italian Pie, Pizza Roma, community health clinics, and others.
